Welcome to the UCSD Infant Vision Laboratory!

The Infant Vision Laboratory is located on the UCSD La Jolla campus in San Diego, CA. We study the visual abilities of infants in order to gain insight into how the human perceptual system develops and changes over time, and which neural mechanisms may underlie such development. Of special interest to our lab is the development of color and motion perception. We use straightforward, non-invasive behavioral measures, such as preferential looking and directional eye movement assessments, to detect infants' changing visual abilities.

Study Information for Parents of Infants in San Diego

We are recruiting for studies involving:

INFANTS * AUTISM * PREMIES* DEAFNESS * VISUAL DISORDERS * TWINS

Among other findings, results from our studies demonstrate that infants as young as three months of age can perceive moving patterns very well, suggesting that the brain areas responsible for motion-processing develop rather quickly. Some of our current studies aim to clarify the course of this system's early development by examining more specific motion-processing abilities.

One of our current projects is a longitudinal study that examines visual, behavioral, and neural development in infants at familial risk for developing an autism spectrum disorder. Other projects explore the effects of atypical eye conditions on the development of vision, the effects of auditory deprivation in adult deaf subjects, and the effects of attention on motion processing in adults. We are always looking for new subjects to participate in our studies; if you live in the southern California region, have an infant 5-months of age or younger, and are interested in learning more about participation in our research, please contact our lab coordinator, Marie, at (858) 822-0642 or mchuldzhyan@ucsd.edu. Free parking and $5/hour compensation is provided. We look forward to hearing from you!

Infant Vision Lab Personnel :

Dr. Karen Dobkins received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1992 from the University of California, San Diego and has been conducting research on infant visual processing for over 15 years. Dr. Dobkins has on-going support from the National Institute of Health (NIH) for her research on the development of visual motion processing in young infants, as well as for her research tracking sensory, neural and behavioral development in infants at risk for autism. The National Science Foundation (NSF) provides support for her research on visual processing in deaf subjects.
